We will be hosting a public forum, 1pm on Thursday February 16th at The Renaissance Event Venue (285 Queen St.), to follow-up the Feb 15th inspiring presentations and video documentary. This will be an opportunity for you to share ideas and form new partnerships through moderated discussions on many of the topics covered at the Building Arts Communities In Kingston seminar.

A.R.T - A New Year

Well, our group was reeeeally small January 3rd when we met at Tina Roeder's beautiful home by the Kingston Yacht ClubI had planned to talk more about the A - Z Business Tips from the December Crafts Report magazine but as it was only Tina, Denise Love and me, Carolyn, we sort of had a 'women's' coffee morning but 'studio' geared. We talked about working and not working, finding work and fitting our passions for our work into our busy lives as our families grow and change. How to keep on working under dire conditions (as I endeavoured in 2010 when my Mum was sick and passed away). We all of us at this sort of age, go through these life passages and if we don't work in an office or some second job with some sick or compassionate leave we will not see a pay cheque.....how to cope? We also chatted about changing horses in mid stream...changing mediums, learning new skills and that sort of thing, that keeps us excited about our craft and art so we can carry on inspired, refreshed. Appropriate for a New Year!

Here is a shot of Tina's work corner in her studio. Being a fibre artisan with a studio full of wool, knitting machines, sewing machines, books and all manner of other stuff collected over the past three decades her tiny space blew me away! But that's jewellery making for you.

I guess we use whatever tools we need...whatever they were originally intended for!!!!

Sometimes it's just good to sit in a bright room with colleagues and learn that we have all been in places where we were either swept along by life and struggled to keep our wits about us and our heads above water. We come away realizing that perhaps our lot wasn't quite as bad as we thought or that if it was/is there are our artisan colleagues and friends who understand and may offer a word of advice from their own experience.

I just got back from a wonderful weekend of workshops in Syracuse and though the border gives me the willies I spent the time with some amazingly super people, helping them become creative and bringing out their inner child!

I gave a small talk at October's Artists Round Table on self publishing with Blurb.com. I recently built my new little notebook (in sidebar) on my way to putting another one together. I learned the software, which was fun and you can use your creativity. Anyway, I was so thrilled a) to see Tina Roeder at the Makers Hand show this past weekend, with a booth up front...an ace spot, and b) to see she had made a book for herself and ordered it in hard cover. This was a handy little book for folk to look through at her booth, useful if she, say, is busy with a customer.

Now I'm preparing for Saturday's opening of Focus on Fibre at Artemisia Gallery in Westport...with my friends Sylvia Naylor, Margot Miller and so many more. The opening is Saturday afternoon 1 - 5 and I will be demonstrating.

Then it's off to Ottawa for the Signatures show - the first time I've done this particular one...I'm a little wary of its location as the parking is way more expensive than at Lansdowne Park (for us and the visitors) but .... we'll see. At least we don't have to tote a carpet or a structure!

If any of you have something you would like to see on the ART blog let me know and I'll be happy to write it up and post photos.

Media Workshop for Artists

Greg Tilson is organizing a KAC Media Workshop on Tuesday November 9th 2010, 7:30pm at the Residence Inn - Marriott, 7 Earl St.

The hope is to bring together a good representation of local artists, arts organizations and media, to discuss best practice for promoting arts and initiatives in Kingston.

There will be a panel of local media representatives including: CKWS, The Whig, The Journal, CFRC, KTW, The Kingstonist, Kingston Life, who will describe what they can offer to help promote the Kingston arts community. They will also try and facilitate discussion with local arts organizers in attendance, to help learn from each other's successes and failures in promoting Kingston arts events.

Of course they would love to hear your perspective on this subject. If this interests you please let Greg Tilson know at KAC so he can properly prepare for seating etc.

Hello all. As Lindsey has moved on from the ART to all the myriad other things she has on her slate (not t mention being a Mum) she has invited me to be and author on this blog so I can reach you all.

So, this is just a reminder that our next Artists Round Table meeting is on Tuesday November 2nd (next week!) So doff your Halloween costume and show up as your usual selves.

We need to work out a schedule for the Winter and to get input and help from all of you so come armed with suggestions and things you think you can make happen such as guest speakers.

The time has come...

I could feel this coming last spring and throughout the summer, but after 4 years I am going to have to officially 'retire' from coordinating the Artist Roundtable Group. I'm balancing a lot of hats right now and although this is one of the smallest, easiest ones I just can't do it justice. So, I will leave it with the group to solve where to go from here. Hopefully the solution is to keep it going, maybe someone else will even step up to the plate to send the email reminders, update the blog, coordinate the schedule and guide the discussions. If you are that someone - let me know and I can show you the ropes. I still hope to attend from time to time, not as a facilitator, just as a fellow artist.

This is a lunch and learn event. Again we are out of the boardroom and into the studio. This time it's Betty Jane Ware's Goddess Blends soap studio, but instead of talking about business models we are going to have demos from 3 of our artists - Betty Jane on soap making, Carolyn Barnett on her knitting machine and Tina Roeder on etching metal. Bring something to share for lunch and your bathing suit for a swim in the afternoon.

We had back to our regular meetings in September.

Photographing Your Work

Here are the notes from the Photographing your work discussion at the Feb Meeting (thanks Jane for collecting and posting):

Use all types of photos: use your phone to take action shots of things happening in your studio or work in progress; use your point and press camera for promotional photos for web; and hire a photographer (or use your own DLR) to generate magazine quality images.

Lighting is the most important thing (after deciding what camera to use).

SLC Brockville, CARFAC and OCC are hosting a Photography workshop on 26 Feb by Janice Van Dijk (Kingston artist and photographer). Check out the OCC website for more details.

Fine Craft and Artist Directory for Kingston

The Kingston Regional Arts Council is pleased to announce the creation of the annual directory of professional visual artists, artisans and craftspeople that live and work in Kingston and the surrounding areas. This directory will be marketed to tourists and residents to promote our studios and galleries in the region.

The multi-page, colour brochure will be distributed at tourism tradeshows, through the Kingston Tourism Office, hotels, and by numerous private enterprises, such as galleries, stores and local patrons. We are targeting a completion date of the middle of April 2010. This will allow distribution of the directories at the beginning of May, which marks the start of the region’s tourist season. As such, the deadlines are tight and I urge you to respond no later than Friday, January 29, 2009 in order to be included in the directory.

Email Lindsey for an application for individual artist listings and advertising space in the directory. Please complete the form and return it along with payment (payable to the Kingston Arts Council). All listings will be in alphabetical order, and will include a photo (supplied by you) of your art. Ads will be distributed throughout the guide. Your photo or artwork for ads should be emailed to me at linds@lindseyfair.ca.

The Bicentennial of the War of 1812

The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is fast approaching, and the St. Lawrence War of 1812 Bicentennial Alliance is committed to promoting this historic anniversary with a number of events and programs. As a board member of the Alliance, I am interested in talking to the local arts and museum community to share what events the Alliance has planned thus far and brainstorming collaborations and partnerships for activities for 2012-2014.

I invite you to join me and my colleagues for a discussion that will include a brief overview of the Alliance and what activities are already planned, some ideas for funding, and a brainstorming session to make the visual and performing arts a vital and important component of this monumental anniversary.

As we move into 2010, we are posed to re-launch the Kingston Arts Council as a major voice of the colour, vitality, and passion of the arts. Thanks to new funding, a brand new Interactive Arts Portal (web site) is in the final stages of development – and we're dedicated to ensuring that every artist and arts-based organization in the area will be included in a comprehensive Artists’ Directory. We are also committed to making sure that the Kingston Arts Council works for you!

I've started to have a few requests about how members can send notices out to the group. After giving this some thought, I decided that it is probably not a great idea to allow all members access to send notices as we may all get swamped with emails - although they all maybe valuable information, I don't want to turn anyone off. So here's the solution. You can provide comments to this post. This where members can post member to member information such as notices, call for artists, upcoming shows, etc.

If you would like to add events to the calendar, send them to me and I'll post them. If it gets to be to be too many for me to post, I'll look for volunteers to help with this.

within the 2010 Spring One of a Kind Show

DEADLINE TUESDAY DECEMBER 1st 2009

Following the success of the Ontario Crafts Council’s (OCC) Growing Ontario’s Craft Community
Initiative in eastern Ontario during 2008-09, the OCC will feature eastern craft artists
for its new section within the choice market of the 2010 Toronto One of a Kind Show and
Sale. Not only will this section highlight and provide sales opportunities for vendors, each
participant will grow through professional development experiences and will have fewer
burdens than solitary exhibitors—see show details!

CALL FOR ENTRY
The Ontario Crafts Council invites applications for exhibitors/vendors for premium space as
housed within the OCC section of the spring One of a Kind Show. 20 applicants will be approved
for participation through a juried process.

About the Show: The One of a Kind Show and Sale (OOAK) in Toronto is Canada’s largest
and most prestigious retail show featuring the work of artists and craftspeople from across
Canada. OOAK spend $1 million in the greater Toronto area for the combined promotion of
the winter and spring shows. The fi ve day spring show attracts 50,000 visitors.

Successful Studio Tour Tips

Here's a quick summary of tips for running a successful studio tour or open house that were suggested at the the Artist Roundtable Discussion Group this month:

2 or more artists in each venue

artist shopping opportunity either before you open to the public or at the end of one of the days

special invite only event prior to opening for the public

have preview photos or video taken and posted before opening

wrap up party to collect vendor feedback as soon as possible - maybe even onsite

involve media

do a draw to collect email addresses

plan the date a year out

send reminders 1 week and 2 days before

make sure to have signage and have brochures available on the sign itself

promo the morning of the show to media and on social networking sites
